Thanks as usual to Kit Baum, a revision of -sparkline- is available on SSC. -sparkline- was announced in http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2013-01/msg00922.html and a revision was announced in http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2013-02/msg00824.html and the explanation and advice given still applies. Scott Merryman alerted me to poor handling of string variables supplied to the -over()- option; this is fixed. Thanks to Scott for his vigilance. Otherwise, the help file has been revised with an extra reference.
