I don't have access at this moment to Stata 8 or its documentation,
but my guess is that you have -outsheet- for the first while appending
the files is easy in any operating system, including MS Windows.
Alternatively, you can -append- the data files first in Stata.

You should be able to update to Stata 8.2. See
