there was an update installed which included an <html (...)> header.
After deleting the files manually and reinstalling it seems to work.
That is indeed bizarre, as that is one of official Stata's directories, which is not where the ssc command would put a user-written routine. Which file did you find that contained an html header? Stata's Tech Support should hear about that, presuming you used -update all- to get the updates.
