st: Where to place .mo files

I have a .do file and some associated .mo files (found on a
researcher's website), but the .do file can't find the .mo files (at
least the first one) and gives the error:
<istmt>: 3499 optw() not found
where -optw()- is the name of the mata function, which has a filename
"optw.mo" and is in the current directory.
I have tried -mata : mata set matamofirst on-, -adopath ++ .-, and
saving the .mo files to a subfolder in my PERSONAL folder, but none of
these allow the .do file to find the .mo file.
How can I fix this? Do I need to somehow manually load .mo files? Thanks!
