Position Title: Research Assistant I- Quantitative & Qualitative Methods
Reports to: Senior Research Associate
Program: Evaluation Research Program
Salary: Level D - $48,320 - $60,400

WestEd’s Evaluation Research program is seeking to hire as research
assistants dynamic

WestEd’s Evaluation Research Program (ERP) conducts program evaluations and
research studies driven by high standards of scientific rigor and the
conduct of inquiry.
WestEd’s ERP works with clients to help them frame appropriate
questions, develop and
apply innovative methods to obtain reliable answers, and scan for
findings that might
have implications beyond a single program. These evaluations lead to better
understanding of whether a program is effective, a policy is having
the desired impact, a
chosen approach is the most cost-effective way of accomplishing
agreed-upon goals,
whether an initiative should be continued, and how an effort can be improved.
Position Description:
We are seeking individuals who will contribute quantitative and
qualitative analyses to
our portfolio of research and evaluation studies. Day-to-day
activities may include
managing quantitative data and constructing datasets from various
sources, observing
programs being delivered in settings (such as classroom observations),
conducting
interviews and focus groups, reviewing and coding program
documentation, analyzing
quantitative and qualitative data to present to clients, conducting
literature reviews and
writing methodology sections, and describing results in reports and PowerPoint
presentations.
Travel will be expected of the person or people hired through this announcement.
Responsibilities:
1. Serve at the direction of a Senior Research Associate
2. Contribute to reports and presentations by conducting quantitative and/or
qualitative analysis
3. Develop analyzable databases by merging data files from various sources
4. Administer online surveys
5. Conduct interviews and focus groups
6. Conduct program observations according to established observation protocols
7. Author sections of reports and proposals
Qualifications:
Education
Master’s Degree in an applied social science (e.g., economics,
sociology, psychology,
education) with coursework in research methods (mandatory)
Experience
• At least one year of experience working in an applied research setting desired
• Experience conducting research in public education or public health
• At least six months of experience managing databases (including merging data
files, identifying and correcting problems, and producing files for
final analysis)

• Effective use of a major statistical package (especially Stata) (Required)
• Ability to develop charts and graphs that accurately and effectively
communicate
findings to lay audiences (Required)
• Conduct observations of programs delivered in settings and code observations
according to established protocols
• Conduct interviews and focus groups and analyze qualitative data
• Ability to take direction from supervisors and to work on one’s own
• Anticipates projects’ needs and addresses them
• Ability and desire to learn about new topics and research/evaluation
methodologies
• Collegiality
• Must be US citizen or authorized to work (visa sponsorship not available).
