Panel data analysis doesn't require -xtset panelid year-. For what you
describe, -xtset panelid- sounds a more natural set-up. That doesn't
rule out using -year- as a covariate.

But all depends on what kind of analysis you have in mind, which isn't
specified here.

Only some companies have assigned multiple patents in certain years. So for example, company X has assigned 4 unique patents in 1999. Stata gives the command that there are repeated time values within the panel. I understand that this is a problem but each patent is a different one and should be included. Has anyone got a solution for me so that I still can use the database?
