I'm not using Stata 12, so I can't check your problem, however, I can
suggest that if you save the Excel sheet you need as a .CSV (comma
separated values) file, Stata should read it in without complaining.
Note: You may need to change all the number formats from "general" to
"number" otherwise Excel (usually) includes commas in the output of
numbers over 999 which can really mess up the CSV file.
