You say that stata 12 now has an automatic memory management. I am about to activate Stata 12 also. Say that in Stata 12 you set the memory to 900m (to use a big file for instance), and that after some manipulations in your do file you manage to reduce the needed memory, does stata 12 automatically manage to reduce the memory that is being reserved?
The allocation of large memory with set mem is problematic when users access stata from a server, as the unused reserved memory might prevent other users to allocate memory also.

As I said, my impression is that there is no difference, as nothing in
Stata 12 changes Windows, but I would want StataCorp to give the
definitive statement on that.
