This seems to be the simplest solution for me, although I had to screw up my courage to fiddle with a part of Stata, even though I renamed it.  
Thanks Scott.

Maybe Stata can make this an option in the future?

You could comment out lines 112-130 of spearman.ado, labeled "produce
a key" ,  and save the file as myspearman.ado in your local directory.
