I did this, but when I issued the matlist command Stata objected with
matrix name or matrix expression required
I must be missing something. This minutiae may be boring to the list. Should we continue off-line?

As Maarten pointed out earlier, you -quietly- issue -spearman- with the -matrix- option. Then you can follow with -matlist-.

What about the following trick:
sysuse auto, clear
qui spearman mpg rep78 turn displacement
matlist r(Rho) , format(%9.3f)
So we suppress all output from -spearman- and let -matlist- display
the returned "correlation" table.
