The ATS UCLA command xi3 had several coding schemes and can still be used to generate variables <http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/stata/faq/xi3.htm>. ... -xi3- is very old and is no longer actively supported. I would suggest trying -desmat- by John Hendrickx.
