Just to close the loop on this issue, manaully changing the DOS
environment variable TEMP before calling stata allowed me to run multiple
copies of Stata9 on Windows7 without the different copies stepping on each
others temp files (ST_*) and causing strange failures.
My one remaining (related) question is, what are files of the form:
STG00000001.tmp
I seem to have one of those left behind in each of my stata temp
directories even though none of my stata jobs failed.
