Nils,
When I switched from Windows to Mac 16 years ago, I felt as you do.
But after switching, I found advantages to having independent windows.
In Windows, Stata had mandated screen space for the Review and
Variables windows. On the Mac, I found myself rarely using them,
whereas I was using the Browser and Help windows much more often.
Because the command window is so small, there was little loss in
having it float, especially since it could be invoked by typing when
the Results window had focus. I also liked having windows as big as I
wanted.
Some tips: Arrange the windows where you would like them to be; Stata
will remember the positions from one session to another. Use the built-
in keyboard shortcuts to hide and show windows. Utilities like iKey
and Keyboard Maestro can enhance this process by giving mouse-free
access to the program menus (a Windows feature I still miss).
My customization: I keep do-files open in BBEdit on the left of the
screen. I place Stata's Results window on the right, but I also open
the Browser and Viewer windows there, because I usually don't need to
see more than one of the three at a time. To view the pdf Manuals, it
does help to have a second monitor!

Hi everyone,
I have recently switched from a PC to a Mac. One thing that bothers me
about the Stata version for Mac is that the results, command, review
and variable windows are separate windows. With the windows version
whenever I clicked on the "results" window, I also got the command
etc. windows to the front, which was something I really liked. On the
Mac I always have to go hunting for all windows whenever I switch from
the do-file editor back to the dataset to have a look at, say,
variable names or whenever I want to do some quick descriptive
statistics before deciding about some cleaning procedure, etc. Is
there a way to "fix" these four windows so that clicking on one of
them always bring all four up to the front?
Any hints are appreciated.
Cheers,
Nils
