I did not see anything posted to the StataList yet, but I should make
you aware that John Nelder, co-developer of generalized linear models -
and originator of the concept of the GLM offset -- among other
accomplishments, died in his sleep on Aug 7 while in the hospital
recovering from a fall. John was 85 and has been in poor health for
some 3 - 4 years. But he remained involved in statistics to the end,
advocating Hierarchical GLMs as a method for dealing with random
effects. He was a giant in our discipline.
John leaves a considerable legacy, and had many friends throughout the
statistical community. It is my understanding that Roger Payne, a long
time friend, is preparing a rather thorough obituary, which should be
available on the web in the very near future, if not already.
He will be missed.
