I had a similar issue - the update utilities was slow, so a cancelled and updated the executable, did the swap and then did the update utilities. It was slow but eventually completed. I'm doing the updates now on my netbook. It went much faster this morning on a much slower machine.
Keep trying.

Its so slow I keep on getting time-outs (r(677) when trying to update
the executable.
No proxy in place, ado-files have updated fine but it just sits there...
. update all

Utilities update log
1. verifying /usr/local/stata11/utilities is writeable
2. obtaining list of files to be updated
remote connection failed -- see help r(677) for troubleshooting
r(677);
Bit annoying, but there, hopefully server load will decrease and it
will right itself.
