The devil is in the details when it comes to such problems.
So, if you want an answer to that question you will have to
give a lot more information.
The three likely causes are 1) your collegue used more
numerically stable computations, 2) your collegue provided
better starting values, 3) your collegue provided Matlab
with analytical first and/or second derivatives while you
used -lf-.
