Carmen, the solution could be as easy as

gen newvar=_n
*******

You may want to prepend -bysort id- to this call, if you want to assign the
newvar within ids.




BTW, "new-var" would not be a legal -varname-. Note you can always check via
-di strtoname("new-var")-.
