I run into this problem on Stata 9 a lot (I haven't upgraded in a 
while), mostly when I am running multiple Stata sessions 
simultaneously.  If that is the case, you might be able to avoid the 
problem by starting each Stata session from a different OS shell, with 
the environment variable STATATMP set to a different value for each.  
This could be done on Windows by invoking Stata through a ".cmd" script 
wrapper.  I'll be honest, though, I haven't actually tried this.  I live 
with restarting my script whenever it breaks on that error.
