I would suggest you try Ultraedit in conjunction with Friedrich Hueblers
"rundolines" plugin:

It has worked spectacularly for me, and Ultraedit ticks all the boxes for
your points (a) to (c). No problems under W7, either...

Dear Martin,

Thanks very much for considering my question.

Actually, I have been using Crimson Editor for a long time but since I
upgraded to W7 I get all kinds of problems with permissions, which is
what has prompted me to go back to the (much improved!) do-file editor
in Stata. I have experimented with others (mostly Notepad ++) but I
have not found one that (a) is easy to get to mark up Stata code, (b)
has a simple way to add "hotkeys" to do files and selected lines and
(c) plays nicely with W7. CE and N++ do pretty well with (a) and (b),
less so with (c). I would certainly be open to other suggestions.

Thanks for the registry tip as well, however I think I am fainthearted.
