Thank you very much. i still don't know what's wrong with that merge do-file, but i identified and dropped duplicates by using
sort patient_id admission_diagnosis diagnosis_desc other_diagnosis
quietly by patient_id admission_diagnosis diagnosis_desc other_diagnosis: gen dup = cond(_N==1,0,_n)
tabulate dup
drop if dup>1
is this a right way?
