But that hint doesn't really help OS X users. If your are a mac user, the solution is to use quotation marks around the path and to let STATA create the file. For example,
. regress partratio empratio exratio popinv
. estout using "/Users/XXX/Documents/regress.txt"
This will create the file "regress.txt" for you in the defined place. No errors.
