I'd imagine screening will also help prevent spam "bots" from
registering on the list.
Not that there's much spam makes it to the list anyway, the listserver
seems quite good at weeding them out (bar the occasional 'Out of
Office').
MedStats ( http://groups.google.com/group/MedStats )has a screening
process whereby you have to answer a question (or two, can't
remember).
Personally I don't see that its really an impediment to subscribers.
