Thanks to Kit Baum, a new package -cgroup- is now available for download from SSC. In Stata, use the -ssc- command to do this.
The -cgroup- package is described as below on my website. I wrote it to simplify the task of inputting data from generic spreadsheets, keyed by multiple string variables, and converting these data to Stata datasets, keyed and sorted by numeric factor variables of the kind used by Stata Version 11. It is useful in conjunction with the -sencode- package, which you can also download from SSC.
Best wishes

TITLE
cgroup: Group contiguous observations with identical values of a varlist
DESCRIPTION/AUTHOR(S)
cgroup inputs a list of variables specified by a varlist, and
generates, as output, a new integer-valued variable,
indicating, in each observation, membership of a group of
contiguous observations with identical values of the varlist.
It is therefore a non-sorting version of gsort.
