There is no doubt that good style is good, but fact is that
there is no way that writing programs will count as a "serious"
academic activity in the institutions that I know, however good
we are going to cite, document, referee our own and each others
code. So for me, writing code is a hobby, and I cannot afford
to spent the time and effort to become a professional: it would
do too much harm to my academic career. I am affraid that the
same is true for most people who have contributed programs.
