Regarding the topic of long variable labels being truncated
when converting data from SAS to Stata:

The newest version of my SAS to Stata data conversion programs:
savastata (SAS macro that saves a SAS dataset as a Stata data)
usesas (Stata package that runs savastata to load a SAS dataset
           into Stata)

as of March 2009 now create notes for variables that have labels
that are longer than 80 characters (max of 256) in SAS. They also just create variable labels with the first 80 characters of the variable label.

The easiest way to get the savastata SAS macro is to just install
-usesas-:
 . ssc install usesas

and it will be installed in:
 ado/plus/s/savastata.sas
