I should have added that I opened Stata10, typed -log using stata10.log-;
then I closed Stata10, opened Stata9 and typed -log using stata9.log-

I have Stata 9 and Stata 10 on my computer. I have experienced no conflicts. If you double click on a dta file to open it, it will open up in the last used version of Stata. This, of course, can lead to an error message if you are opening a Stata 10 file with Stata 9.
