Quite so. There is not likely to be a speed improvement from Mata in
this instance as the I/O load of this routine is probably 99.999% of
CPU cycles used. But I just find doing it with Mata cleaner and more
modular, as well as more reusable. If you want to look at some elegant
file-handling Mata code, viewsource adoupdate.ado.
