The most I can get on OS X with 3 gb installed is 1.9 gb using Stata
10.1.

Be aware that there are a number of applications that seem to park in
the middle of the memory space. I've found my instant messaging
application can severely limit available memory and web browsers can
eat up a surprising amount of memory, especially if you are using a
multitabbed one.
Having just checked out specifications on a new Dell, I was surprised
to see the number of offerings now available in 64-bit platforms. I
suspect that Stata for 32bit Windows has only a few years of
shelf-life left. Then the question will become, do I want all those
cores working or not?
