It is the length of each individual program that matters. From what you
say, that is unlikely to be the issue.

Yes, there are several. Those programs do work if I cut and paste one 
from my 9.2 do-file to an open do-file in 10. However, the problem I 
experience with Stata crashing happens at the precise moment when I 
attempt to open the do-file using Stata's do-file editor, before I've 
run a single line of code.
