In addition to much good advice, it may be that these spaces are not
really spaces at all, but some exotic character.
-charlist- from SSC is one tool here. Look for things that look like
spaces but are not char(32).
Alternatively, use -hexdump- on the data file.

I have a string variable.
At the end of many observations I seem to have an extra space character
which does not go away when I use -trim()-.
Also I have tried adding a " dummy" to all the observations and then
using -itrim()-. But some observations continue to have two spaces
between the second last and last word.
