There are two questions there. First, you want to have the data browser
open while you do other stuff, and I appreciate why. Second, you want
the browser to keep updating as the data change. I don't know
StataCorp's take on that, but the second wish sounds much less likely to
be honoured than the first. My wild guess is that StataCorp would never
even want to do that.
An old chestnut has Dennis Ritchie, principal architect of C, on being
asked by all sorts why C did not have this or that feature, responding,
"If you want PL/1, you know where to find it". If you want Excel, ....

While I understand Nick's objections to allowing one to change data in
both the data editor and via command line commands, do these objections
apply to the data browser?
Sometimes it might be quite convenient to run things (either command
line or in the do-file editor), and see the changes in variables
immediately in the browse window.
