A "futility" sensu meo is just a little utility for working with
_f_iles. That's all my idea of frivolous wordplay (a little in the
manner of John Tukey, although without the genius) and not at all
anything pejorative. I believe that I have applied the word _only_ to
some of my own programs. Roger's free to do the same!

Thanks to Kit Baum, a new package -bynote- is now available for download
from SSC. In Stata, use the -ssc- command to do this.
The -bynote- package is described as below on my website. It may look
like what Nick Cox calls a "futility". However, it is likely to be
useful for users like me, who routinely use 3 or even 4 by-variables in
a -by()- option for a graph, and who sometimes find that, by default,
Stata doesn't always use all the variable labels, and/or doesn't give
the overall note in exactly the format they wanted. Such users may also
want to reserve the option of modifying variable labels in an upstream
program a few months later, and expect this modification to carry
through to their multiple by-group graphs.
Best wishes
Roger

TITLE
bynote: Create a note with a user-specified format for use with
the by option
DESCRIPTION/AUTHOR(S)
bynote creates a note for use as the note() suboption of the
by-option of the graph command. This note is made up of the
variable labels of the variables in the varlist, if these labels
exist, and of the names of these variables otherwise. The user
can specify a format for this note, and/or save it in a local
macro. The by-option automatically sets the overall note()
suboption to a list of by-variable names and/or labels by default,
but it does not always have the format that the user wanted, and
may not use all the variable labels.
