Doing this kind of model selection right is really the art of
data-analysis, and can, in the end, only be done by the analyst who has
(or should have) all the knowledge about the subject matter, the
hypotheses, and the peculiarities of the data. Generally speaking,
relative frequencies seems as good/bad a criterium as any other, but
this may or may not be true for your specific project.
