To gloss Maarten's reply, perhaps unnecessarily: In Stata terms a local
macro is _not_ regarded as a variable.

storing a single value in a variable is highly inefficient and
unnecesary. They way to store a single number is to use locals (or if
you are really worried about precision in scalars, see:
