Re: st: Stata Technical Bulletin
This debate is part of a larger debate. This is what is happening
locally (it had to happen):

On my wish list for the future - Through my school, I have e-access

among them. I have my own subscription, but I'd like it to be the
case that scholars everywhere had easy access to SJ, just like they
do other journals. It increases the likelihood of the work being
read and cited. I don't know if it is in StataCorp's best economic
interest to provide such access, but anything that helps to spread
the word about Stata probably doesn't hurt.
Many journals provide free access to back issues, which varies from
articles published more than a year ago to articles published more
than three year ago.
I would agree with Richard here. I doubt if making older articles from
SJ available freely would hurt subscriptions, and, indeed, it might
encourage them. And I doubt whether purchases of back issues of the
journal is a significant source of revenue, though I could be wrong.
Since authors provide content to the Stata Journal free of charge, it
seems reasonable that when the Stata journal has benefited from this
content for a period of time, it should then be made available to
others on the same basis on which it was made available to the journal
in the first place - freely.
The continued existence of the SJ relies on their being able to
publish profitably, but perhaps the value of the journal to science
and society would be increased by making older articles freely available.
