If I open the do-file editor in updated Stata 10/SE (running on
Windows XP) (either by clicking on the icon or using -doedit-), the
do-file editor is minimized to the toolbar. Clicking the minimized
do-file editor in the tool bar does not maximize the window. I am
only maximize the do-file editor by right-clicking on the minimized
window and choosing maximize or restore. Once the program window is
maximized (or restored--which also expands the program to the full
screen), I cannot change its size. I am stuck with either a fully
expanded (full-screen) do-file editor, or a completely minimized
window. I would like the do-file editor to be smaller than the full
screen.
Has anyone else experienced this, and how have they fixed it? Or have
I missed some Stata 10 or (more likely) Windows "feature"?

You are not alone; confusion about disappearing windows is common.
There are many things you can do with the windowing, but here is
a simple and, in my experience, robust solution. Start with the
factory settings:

Next, maximize the main Stata window (click the maximize button: [X]).
Now, adjust the size and location of the different windows, using the
mouse. When finished, make your choices the default by:

Save preferences
Save your preferences with a name, e.g. -myprefs-. If you somehow lost
the settings, you can easily recreate them by:

myprefs
You may control the behavior of the windows by:

There are quite a number of checkboxes. I suggest checking none of them.
If you want to experiment, look at the possibilities in [GSW] 4 The
Stata User Interface.
Hope this helps.
