An earlier reply to this query pointed to a FAQ at

This FAQ is very helpful and has a link to a Microsoft hotfix. That patch
to XP does work and does so better than the reply indicated (it suggested
a maximum under 1G). Prior to installing the fix I could access 745M RAM
in Version 10 and 938M RAM in version 9 on my 2GB 32 bit computer. After
installation of the fix I could access 1245M in both versions. Rebooting
without start-up programs and in other streamlined configurations makes no
difference. You will probably have to periodically reinstall the hotfix,
since XP updates seem to nullify it.

experienced this? Can anything be done? (other than changing to 64 bit
system).
