Thank you very much for this solution. As promised, I am delighted,
but also slightly chagrined that I couldn't figure it out myself.
So I revise my earlier suggestion for the 2nd edition of Michael N.
Mitchell's Visual Guide to Stata Graphics to:
Please include some examples employing user-written programs, such as
Nick Cox's -catplot- and -tabplot- (available at SSC), for graphing
categorical data.
