The suggestion to make Stata 9 forward compatible obviously is not viable.
So -saveold- is the answer.
However: Stata 8 and 9 have a -saveold- command saving in version 7 format. Wouldn't it be much more transparent if the final Stata 9 upgrade includes a clone of -saveold- with the name -save7-, and that Stata 10 has a -save9- command.
A user mentioned on the list recently that they were using Stata 7,
which is two (soon to be three) version releases behind.
Instead of having lots -save#- for each respective version perhaps an
additional option to -saveold- would allow the user to save the data
for which ever version of Stata their colleague has (providing this
isn't going to bloat the amount of code required).
