As a follow up...
Further googling around led me to http://mdbtools.sourceforge.net/
which is a project to provide tools and applications for interacting
with MS *.mdb files and according to the FAQ includes GPL'd MDB ODBC
drivers for linux.
I shall see if I can get things working with this.
Any tips/experience from people who have done similar would be welcome.
