I can't give a solution to the student problem, Emma.
Perhaps if you sequentially replace each student's grade with a "fail"
until they discover that some due diligence on their behalf is
required...
However, thanks for letting the list know the rename approach is workable.

Tom suggested renaming the duplicate variables one at a time. This
solution does indeed work.
Though I still can't decide if I'm relieved or concerned that none of
