st: values of string variable into matrix rownames

Hi,

how can I extract values of a string varaible and put them into
rownames of a matrix?

Assume I have a string variable "city". Now

tab city

London 1
Berlin 1
.

How can I grab the London, Berlin, etc. vector of names to put them
into the colnames of a matrix later on?
