If you're going to make a .csv file anyway, there is no need to use
Stat/Transfer. You can just save as .csv from Excel. Once you have a
.csv with the variable names included as the first row, you can import
into Stata using -insheet- with the -names- option.
If you want to use Stat/Transfer, check the "Field Name Row" section
under the "Options (2)" tab to make sure you will be preserving the
column names.

Thanks Joe,
I've used Stat/Transfer - and it makes a .csv file,
which I then import into Stata (though I think it
leaves the variable names off at that point?). I can
copy and paste as well. Whatever works best. thanks
for your help.
