Stata runs faster with a fast processor but what effect does the
video card have? In a post from 2004, Alan Riley writes "if Stata is
producing a lot of output in the Results window, a poor video card
... can really bog Stata down"
(http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2004-07/msg00690.html). Does
the video card also have an effect on the time needed to draw graphs?
I am thinking of maps produced with -tmap- from SSC, which can be
very time-consuming, but also of the usual scatter plots or bar
graphs.
If someone buys a new computer with an Intel Core Duo processor and
Windows XP, which video card should he or she select for the best
performance of Stata? Assume that the choices are between these
cards:
- Integrated card, e.g. Intel GMA 950
- Workstation card, e.g. NVIDIA Quadro NVS or Quadro FX
- Gaming card, e.g. ATI Radeon X1900
Are there noticeable differences between these cards regarding the
speed of Stata? What would be the best choice for someone who
produces a lot of graphs with Stata?
