st: tsappend with unbalanced panel

I am trying to add a few data periods to my panel data, simply using:

. tsappend, add(3)

Apparently, Stata gets stuck somehow: there are no error messages, but 
the do-file does not continue to execute. I wonder if the problem is 
caused by the fact that the panel is unbalanced. Can anyone help? Thanks.
