Marilyn,
If you are using Mexican ENIGH household surveys (Encuesta Nacional de
Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares) I have a do-file explaining how to deal
with the problems that you are facing (counting the number of children in
the household and missing values) and some others that you might find in the
future. If you are interested I can send it to you off-list.
