Some additional comment from me:
I just created a test dataset containing 10,000,000 observations for 4
variable with double precision. That was no problem. Per variable
Stata needs 80,000,000 bytes. So this adds up to 320,000,000 bytes for
the 4 variable. Overhead etc needs another 40,000,000, so that Stata
needs 360,000,000 bytes of memory (reserved using -set mem-) to cope
with the data.
