What you are probably doing wrong is putting the same filename as the 
-using- file and the -appendto()- option. Assuming that you want to create 
a file -table_countries.txt- and then append to it, you should type


listtex name using table_countries.txt if sample39_absence==1, 
rstyle(tabdelim) replace
listtex name if sample32_absence==1, rstyle(tabdelim) 
appendto(table_countries.txt)


The -using- file, if it already exists is overwritten (not appended to) if 
-replace- is specified, and otherwise causes the error message that you got.
