Nuno wants to generate a new variable which is based on another variable (x) deciles/quartiles.
The easiest solution I know is to use egen's cut() function. Here it generates four groups of approximately the same size; they are numbered from 0 to 3:
. egen newvar=cut(x) , group(4)
