To add to that a bit - hitting "reply" to start a new thread, even if you totally erase everything from the old one, is not a good idea either. Even though you have seemingly deleted all traces of the original, Stata still thinks you are replying to the original message. For an example, see

and note how Jeff Pitblado's original post on svy variance estimation (July 18, 2005) has now morphed into 2 other unrelated topics! This clutters up the original topic and will make it harder for anyone using the archives to find what they want.
